Water quality trading is a market-based mechanism that aims to improve water quality in a way that maximizes economic efficiency while conserving environmental integrity. This issue’s cover article, “Water Quality Trading Mechanism Enhances Willingness to Upgrade Rural Household Septic Systems in the Western Lake Erie Basin, Northwest Ohio,” studied the willingness of rural households to participate in water quality trading for septic system upgrades. Findings show that more than one half of responding households were willing to upgrade their septic systems in a water quality trading program.
